“It’s Our City Now”: New York For Kids

Written by Laura Gavin

So you’ve decided you’re going to the Big Apple. You’ve booked your flights to New York, but aren’t sure what you'll do once you step off on the plane. You're probably already aware of the attractions that the adults will enjoy, including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the city's many museums, but what is there to do for kids?

Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Wildlife Zoo is a major attraction for anyone visiting New York but it's a must-see attraction for anyone with kids. There are more than 5,000 creatures at the zoo including lemurs, deer, elephants, antelope, Indo-Chinese tigers, and Mongolian wild horses.

Museum of the Moving Image

New York is full of great museums like the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but none are going to have mass-appeal to children. The Museum of the Moving Image, on the other hand… now that has enough attractions to keep even the most energetic kid happy, including playable classic video games like Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man (no one can resist Pac Man!).

Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Your children probably won't want to spend too much of the New York holiday in museums, but this one's different because it's tailored to children. Since it opened in 1899, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum has amassed a collection of kids' toys, including rare musical instruments, masks, and dolls. The World Brooklyn interactive museum, which is a mini-shopping center where little ones can knead pretend dough at the Mexican Bakery and shop at a collection of made-up retailers, should keep the kids entertained for a while.

Sony Wonder Technology Lab

If you or your children are into new technology, go along to the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in Midtown East. There are hours of fun to be had with exhibits like the Dance Motion Capture stand where kids are encouraged to do their best booty shake for the cameras. Once they've performed in front of the camera, your kids can go behind it and pick an avatar which will reproduce their moves.

Coney Island

Luna Park's attractions might not rival those at Disney World but the theme park on Coney Island is full of arcades and amusements that will keep your children happy. If your children are tall enough to ride the Cyclone, make sure they have a go. It’s the park's most spectacular ride.

Your kids will love all this. In fact, you will. Maybe they’ll be the ones trying to drag you home!

WOW! New York has a lot of wonderful places to visit. I would love to visit New York and to the Bronx Zoo and see the animals. I know that I would love to go to Coney Island.

I don't know that I am brave enough to take my kids there.... I can barely handle them in my city! Maybe someday, when they are older, like 30 lol

We are NYers however this year we have planned a day in a Coney Island for the first time. I want to try the new roller coaster.

These are amazing places - I have great memories of going to the Bronx Zoo when I was very little - I wasn't much bigger than the duck that chased me for a piece of bread. All the animals, and nice walking, fun place for kids and grown ups, too!

We have a yearly pass to the Denver Zoo. Great to just go for a while.

We were going to our zoo today but there was a severe weather alert with possible tornadoes, hail and rain so we went to a movie instead.
