Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Review And Giveaway - THREE WINNERS

My husband and I enjoy watching movies together. We have family movie nights when there are new movies that the whole family can watch, or we put the kids to bed and have a movie night without them if it isn't toddler appropriate.

We were sent Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief DVD to review.

Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan, the film follows trouble-prone Percy Jackson who finds himself having problems in high school… but that’s the least of his challenges. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus have walked out of the pages of his Greek mythology texts and into his life, and they’re not happy – Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Learning he is the son of Poseidon, the young teen finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, and embarks on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Directed by Chris Columbus (first two Harry Potter films), Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief stars rising star Logan Lerman (“Jack & Bobby”), and features an ensemble cast including Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds), Steve Coogan (Night At The Museum films), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill films), Pierce Brosnan (The Thomas Crown Affair, James Bond films), Catherine Keener (Where The Wild Things Are), and Kevin McKidd (“Grey’s Anatomy”).

This DVD is rated PG and has a total run time of 105 minutes. It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 29,2010. The Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Blu-ray includes over an hour of special features, 10 deleted scenes, a “Secrets of the Gods” featurette, an “On Set” with Brandon T. Jackson, and much more. The standard DVD includes five deleted scenes, “Bringing The Book To Life” featurette and a “Discover Your Powers” quiz.

I originally thought that it would be OK for Evan to watch, but there were a few "scary" parts that are not good for a 2 year old(hence the PG rating). I thought the previews looked good, so I was excited to see it. The movie kept our attention and there were several moments that had my heart racing. There were a few parts that we looked at each other and laughed because they were silly or predictable, but all in all, we really enjoyed it. The movie took me through many emotions and I would definitely recommend seeing it. My 13 year old sister is out of town right now but I'm excited to get her to watch it. I'm positive that this movie will be a big hit with the tweens and teens!

Buy It!

I actually do not remember learning any mythology in school, but I have learned quite a bit from reading on my own. Medusa is a favorite character that I enjoy seeing portrayed in movies.

I always enjoyed how one teacher would teach us how pride was always a big contributing factor to why so many heroes had struggle. It was all about showing them that they were not invincable. The Oddessy was my FAVORITE story too.

I loved Greek Mythology classes, I even took a class in college as a blow off course because I knew I would get an A in it. LOL My favorite was the Sirens, half bird and half beautiful woman who sang such sweet songs men would forget everything and then die of hunger. They also resided on the other side of reefs that would cause sailors to reck their boats. :)

My son would love this! He has read the entire series but we didn't make it to the movie theater to see this.

I enjoyed greek mythology as a child and even took a humanities class in college that focused on greek artifacts and mythology.

Lemme see...Orpheus' wife died, and he journeyed to the underworld to get her back. His music so charmed Hades and Persephone that they allowed him to retrieve her, but specified that she had to follow him, and that if he looked back at her even once before leaving Hades, she'd be lost to him. He looked back.

Thank you for the giveaway! I love this movie (and the books, also).

You'd think as an English major in college I would remember more of the top of my head, but the story that always stuck with me was the story of Persephone and her time with Hades and that used as a way to explain the seasons. Also, the journey out of hell, but looking back at the last minute to check and ending up losing his love.
