SOS - Blogger To WordPress

I said I'd NEVER switch from blogger to WordPress because blogger has been working for me for the past 1 1/2 years-why ruin a good thing. WELL, I read a few articles about blogger randomly deleting some blogs. That kinda freaked me out.

I sent out a few emails to trusted bloggers that made the switch to get their opinions and they all say they're happy they did it. I am a total moron when it comes from switching to WordPress-I know NOTHING. So I'm clueless from everything to how to do it, to the overall cost.

I figured that many of you had a wealth of knowledge and could possibly give me your opinions. I am worried that I'll lose my content or readers even though so many others have successfully made the switch.

I've thought about making some changes too but it's far from the top of the priority list...

Take lots of notes on the switchover so you can put together a how-to for the rest of us. hehe :)

I'm going to be making the switch this weekend. I was on the fence about doing it, but reading about freebies 4 mom and the other blogs that got deleted, that pushed me over the edge. So I can't help you out with how it works, but I could after this weekend. :)

I read a few posts on that too. I have three blogs I'd have to switch over.

One thing I do not like about WordPress is how long it takes to make comments. It's slower then Blogger that's for sure. I feel like I have to wait and wait to make another comment to enter a giveaway.

Change can be good, change can also be a pain in the the drain!

I've been thinking about doing that too! The thought of having my blog deleted is scary! My only concern is losing anything in the switch. Do you keep followers, or do you start all over?! It's definitely worth considering, that's for sure!

Dee, don't leave me!!!! Please don't go without talking to me first. I know J is waffling too. I wanna cry!

I've been successful in copying my posts over...however, older comments don't always go (that's a more common problem) and since you are on your own domain already, you shouldn't have a problem with your followers or your feed, either....just saying...

as long as I can keep reading in my google reader I will always read your blog! Word press or not.

Personally the thought of moving to WP nauseates me. I like how user friendly Blogger is BUT I don't like the idea of my blog{s} being deleted completely. I hope your transition is seamless :)

I have a blogger blog, but it's not a giveaway kind and, while I would be royally ticked if it got deleted, it wouldn't affect other people much. For you, I know that is a much different thing. I'll stick with you if you switch, though. And I kind of hate wordpress, too, because of the "slow down, you're posting comments to quickly" garbage, but I can deal with it if you switch. I don't want you to lose your blog!

Chelle said...

Gah...I'm terrified!! I need to read all of the comments that people will leave you. I have no idea how it works :( I'm a WP idiot, haha!

Jennifer said...

Only thing I hate about WP is the way we enter comments... it takes FOREVER when we have the 15 second delay on. So much so I load up another giveaway and enter that one while doing one in WP.... leave OFF the delay and I am happy =)

All of this talk is making me seriously look into switching too...

There's actually a plugin for Wordpress that removes that Slow down you are commenting too fast message.

Watch out because people can hack into Wordpress blogs also, and I've had a few client that their PHP corrupted and they lot their entire blog. There are some issues with both of the content management systems. I suggest backing up your site a lot if you are worried about losing it. Go to your dashboard and your layout area > EDIT HTML and click export blog. Save these in a special area on your harddrive and rename them by date.

Overall, I am happy I made the switch but here were my negatives:

- I lost a TON of comments from older posts.
- My Google Friend connect got all messed up and all of my readers lost my feed which I feel like I took so long to build up my readership.

Other than that, it's pretty easy to use and you can do a great deal with WP. I did pay someone to do a lot of my redesign for WP and I am contimplating changing a few more things soon, too. GOOD LUCK.

I went to wordpress about a month after I started review blogging and have never looked back. Its got more coding involved for really personalized functionality but in general it works well. You don't have to mess with adding widgets and things when you change templates. That is a nice feature!

I've heard good thing about the switch, but I don't think it's something you want to attempt on your own. I know of several bloggers who hired Rent a Geek Mom to help with the migration and they were relieved they did. I will be watching and learning too!

I personally had a blog for a short while on wordpress and couldn't figure it out.

I read a few posts and am a little scared too, but I think I'm going to stick with Blogger. Having my blog redesigned too and she only does blogger blogs.

I've used the wordpress dashboard over at Philly Moms and wasn't too impressed. My main issues with blogger was spacing until I found live writer and now I'm pretty happy.

I'm sure there are great wp features, the way everyone talks it up, but I just finally got my PR rating back after buying my domain and I just don't need the stress now. Let us know how you make out!

i've been contemplating it too and will continue to do my research. there is a gal who will assist you in switching over for FREE... as long as you use her affiliate link to dreamhost. Sharon, i believe is her name from
http://www.goodtrueandbeautiful.com/

she won't do everything FOR you, but from what i understand she will walk you thru it and give you all the help you need.

i'm still considering it, but considering i don't make a whole lot of money blogging, it's hard for me to justify it at this point.

WP is so much better for SEO and search engine stuff. i would love to, but cost is the main thing for me

I haven't read all the comments above because it's bedtime, but I wanted to let you know what I know before I forget heh

I'm one of those who had their blog deleted by blogger :/

The switch is free if you already have your own server, otherwise you just have to find a hosting account - shared ones can be as cheap as $5 a month, my recommendation is to ask a WordPress blogger who's blog loads really fast :)

The switch itself is pretty easy - you install WordPress on your new server (on many servers it will auto-install using the control panel. I know, Greek to you, right? ;) They usually have help files to walk you through it), fix up all the settings and such, and then just import your posts. The setup can be a little daunting, but if you need help I'm sure anyone who's done it could walk you through.

The biggest issue is layout as creating WP layouts is hard. You'd definitely be best having a professional do that part for you, and it's likely as part of the package they'll install WP and set it up for you, too. If you find a free WP layout that you really like, even if it's just SORT of what you want, then you can run with that. That's what I did, I just replaced the header graphic with a Canadian flag and changed the colours throughout the pages.

And, fwiw, my page rank went up 2 spots when I switched :)

I'll come with u if you switch. Right now I can't because I don't have the money so I'll just back up my blog as I can.

Good luck

I've been using wp from the beginning since it was highly recommended and I would not use anything else.

I do know of one big blogger who has been wanting to make the switch but has said it costs too much money at this point.

I know another HUGE blogger Freebies4Mom.com who recently lost her blog...she has like 50k or more? followers and her blog disappeared.

Very scary. I don't why thats happening. Be careful choosing your host too.

I do not have a blog, but wanted you to know that I hate the "you're posting comments too quickly" message that I get on wordpress. It makes me mad!! Blogger very user friendly for me.

Good for you Dee. I've always been on WP so I'm not sure how blogger even works. You have worked so hard to get your site where it is, losing it over night would probably make you completely sick.

I think you will be pleased once you make the change. there are great plug ins that will help with things like comments and such.

Good Luck Dee,

I'm not a blogger to give advice, but I did want to note that I never like it when a blog switches to WP. Mainly because of the comment box - I have to scroll up to the top to remember all the different ways to enter a giveaway, and it takes much longer. Also, WP doesn't allow comments that are the same, so if there was a daily entry I can't just copy and paste that I did it...it has to be different.

Just a few little quibbles. ;) I'm sure from bloggers' perspectives it's worth it, though.

I am so happy that I moved my blog to wp - though Sarah's comment above does hit home for me when I am entering contests, too. I have a plugin that allows people to comment one after the other - love it! Just wish more wp users would install it.

I don't have a very big blog, but I have really enjoyed learning wp - it's super easy and very user friendly. I use a free theme that I am ecstatic about, and actually switching from blogger to wordpress was the push of one button! amazing. Then you put some coding in your blogger blog to redirect it and then you redirect your feed. Voila, all done! The google followers didn't transfer, but maybe by now someone has figured out how to do it.

Also, like #20 Julia said above, Sharon can help. She is really super nice and will help you transfer if you go through her hosting link.

Bottom line, I am really happy I made the switch - I just was too nervous about them deleting my blog because I had a lot of links in it. I can't fathom why blogger seems to want people to go away in droves! Good luck with your decision!

I don’t have a blog, but I do prefer Blogger to Wordpress as a reader. That would not stop me from following you there though. Good Luck and you need to do what you feel is right for your blog :)

Dee, I made the switch January after seeing the same thing happen to others. It is really scary that Blogger has control over something I work so hard at. I had help making with switch and it was very affordable and SO much easier on my brain to not worry about losing anything. And WP is very easy to use in my opinion too :)

This happened to me this morning! I woke up and my all my blogs are gone! I suggest you make the move. I have a family friendly blog and no clue why they would do this. I am pregnant and freaking out. I have emailed google and have yet to hear anything. My biggest concern is all my giveaways and followers could be gone...not to mention my blog design and all the work I did. Complete mess! They even deleted my personal blog where I just share family pictures with our friends and family! Good luck with the move. It looks like I will be having to start from scratch.

I have been with blogger for all most 3 years. I've finally started the switch to WP. I have someone switching me over. I paid $97 for Thesis theme and $10/month hosting and then $35/hr for any design work I need her to do. Most I have figured out on my own but she did install my social media icons for me. I'm leaving blogger b/c I had posts deleted and posts I had scheduled and they never posted. Its frustrated me enough to move. I'll keep my feed subscribers but Google Friend Connect followers will have to re follow my WP blog. Good luck if you decide to switch.

Good Luck! I'll be making the switch sometime in the next few days myself...I read your post last night and figured we'd do it this weekend...my blog was deleted last night and I can't get a hold of anyone! I can't even log in to my Google Reader...eek! Hopefully I can get up and running again soon :)

I know everyone says blogger blogs can disappear...is that possible with WP blogs? Can someone tell me any negative WP experiences? Just curious. I like blogger for now and intend to stick with it but all the hoopla is getting me concerned. As a reader, I dislike visiting WP blogs, but as a blogger I'd be very upset if I lost mine.

Also, what is mroe concerning that this morning I got an email this morning about a giveaway I won on www.aubutfamily.com - went to visit her blog and saw that it had been removed! I got this message:

"Blog has been removed
Sorry, the blog at aubutfamily.blogspot.com has been removed. This address is not available for new blogs.

Did you expect to see your blog here? See: 'I can't find my blog on the Web, where is it?'"

EEEK!

I am considering it too Dee - even though I just had a makeover. It is so frustrating, especially to not know WHY it is happening. I am trying to figure out whether I should hire someone or do it myself...UGH!

Good luck!

I did it myself, because I'm cheap like that- and with lots of googled tutorials I was able to move and I'm so happy I did.

http://www.blog.taterbean.com/2010/03/24/my-move-from-blogger-to-wordpress/

Here's how I did it. I also wrote about how I kept my google friend connect followers in a different post :)

Have you queried Blogger about this problem? Maybe they are overcoming tech difficulties or having growing pains... I would certainly ask why the blogs have been dropped before I split. But, no matter, whither thou etc...this faithful reader will be following along.

My blog isn't nearly as elaborate as yours, however I've been at Wordpress since I started blogging in January and so far I don't have any complaints. It seems very user friendly and also our local newspaper which is pretty large (The Times Union - Albany, NY) has their online bloggers use WP - so it can't be bad on a bigger scale either. Good luck with the switch. I'm not sure if there's a way to move all your existing blogs over to it or not. I'd be curious to know....

I left Blogger 4 months ago and won't look back. I LOVE Wordpress - LOVE it. Best thing I ever did with my blog. I know you have a huge readership, but WP even helps your SEO.
