Pregnancy Questions Answered - Finding Out The Gender

I'm always curious to know what other parents do/did in different situations. If you have a parenting or pregnancy question that you'd like me to post, please send me an email or leave it in the comment section below.

I found out the gender as soon as I could with both of my kids. I didn't really want to know with Isabella, but my husband HAD to know. I've talked to him about it and told him that if we have a #3, I am going to try and keep it a surprise. We have everything that we could possibly need for both a boy and a girl, so it isn't like we need to plan anything. Since it is going to be my last, I really want to wait until the doctor pulls it out and goes "It's a...."! :)

I have a friend that is pregnant for the first time with TWINS and she isn't finding out the sex. It would probably drive me nuts with wonder, but I think it is so neat.

Did you/are you going to find out the gender of your baby?

I found out with both of mine out of sheer need. I needed to know what to buy. (I can't stand the color yellow LOL)

but now that I have one boy and one girl and kept both their things I don't NEED to find out. But I am going to anyways. I know that when I am in the room and the baby is RIGHT THERE I will cave and want to know what it is. I think it helps me bond earlier if I can call it by name too.

yes, as soon as absolutely possible. With my first, that was about 15 weeks. I had to see a specialist for a better ultrasound and ended up with an amnio. DOc told me at the ultrasound and then confirmed it with the amnio (they thought he has DS, but he's perfect!). With the second, I wanted to know ASAP, too. We have 2 boys. If we already had a boy and a girl, I would be fine with waiting. I am a planner, though!

I found out with all of mine. With the first, it wasn't until about 4 weeks before he was born and I was okay with not knowing- but when we had that ultrasound...really, you couldn't help but tell!

Then, with the other 2, I wanted to know if we could just keep using the same clothes or if we were going to need new girly things. All boys.

We didn't find out with our daughter & were 80% sure we were having a boy! My pregnancy was just so different from my friends that were expecting at the same time & were pregnant with girls! We stayed pretty gender neutral decorating & clothing so we were prepared to be wrong! It was so fun to hear "It's a Girl" - we just cried our happy tears & laughed! We probably will not find out the next time either! Very few true surprises in life!

I found out with both of mine too. The first was a girl and we have a boy on the way. I like the idea of being surprised for the third...I wonder if I could do it!

We did not find out with either of our kids. It was so fun not knowing and then hearing the Dr say 'It's a...' both times! We plan on having one more at least and will not find out then either. The surprise is so worth the wait! :)

I had to know with both. If I had another baby I would probably find out as well. I am not good with surprises. I would, however, like to know, but would like to not tell anyone else. I would love to let them squirm ;)

I HAD to know. I'm a planner. Thankfully my husband felt the same way. And? He got the name he wanted. I was sure we'd have a girl because my husband is the only boy (he has 3 half-sisters, he's adopted) and my family is all girls...when they said "it's a boy" I turned to him and said "I hate the name we picked, let's go with yours!" I'll definitely find out with our next one too, I can't stand not knowing.

Cjengo said...

Mmm yes, with both. Although with my second our gender sonogram was when we found out he had had a stroke. So not sure if we have another if I will find out, to much stress. I think it would be very exciting to wait and see!!! :)

The end.

I'm am about 38 weeks pregnant with our first and I absolutely had to know! Besides being super curious, I hate not being prepared. Plus, now they have the ultrasound where parents can see detailed images of the baby, how could I resist? That's just the coolest thing ever!

We didn't find out during either of my pregnancies, and the exact moment of their births was so exciting. I always wanted my husband to have that little "glory moment" of walking into the waiting room and exclaiming, "It's a boy/girl!" to all of our family and friends. Plus, I think for us, it added to the excitement of the pregnancy.

The funny part is, I think that other people were more upset that we weren't finding out than we were. If we're blessed with more children, we may just find out and keep it a secret from everyone else (that could be fun too)! ;P

Did NOT find out and it was such a fun way to be pregnant! Every kick and punch seemed like a clue to who he/she was. I would definetely recommend waiting to everyone!!!

Letherton said...

I found out right away with my first and will with my second. I'm not a green and yellow everything type of girl and I wanted to design the room/ pick out clothing according to gender. I think if I had one of each I might make the one after a surprise.

dannyscotland said...

If I could have found out the gender at the same time I took the pregnancy test, I would have!!! I couldn't *wait* to know what it was!! I wanted a girl soooo badly, and I kept trying to pretend I'd be okay with a boy, but I wanted a girl first. I am so lucky, because I did have a girl, but waiting to know for sure was horrible! I could never do it. No way. If I ever had an ultrasound where they said they couldn't tell, I'd pay to have one of those 3D ones and I'd sit there til they could figure it out!

I did not learn the gender of my first three. I actually liked it that way. 4th one they told me. I kind of missed the surprise, but everyone else wanted to know. And since that pregnancy was far from planned, I had already gotten rid of all my baby stuff, boy and girl. It helped those who wanted to help me replenish those items.

We didn't find out with either of our girls. We did the opposite, if/when there is a third, we agreed to find out!

I found out with both of my girls. With this one I'm finding out AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! If I had one boy and one girl #3 would be a surprise. It's be so fun!

Nikki said...

I found out with my sweet potato and plan on finding out with the next as soon as possible. But if we have a boy and a girl and decide to have another I probably wont find out for that one.

We found out as soon as we could for my son who is now 20 months. I am currently pregnant and due in August and we found out as soon as we could this time too!:)

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted to know. The little stinker had other plans though. We tried 4 times! So, it was a delivery room surprise...and it was AWESOME. With our next one, I'm going to try really hard to not want to know for the next one. It truly was a great experience having that special delivery room announcement and having the dr. ask "Daddy, what do you have?" and then him telling me we had a beautiful little girl. It was amazing.

Arin said...

Our first three children were girls and found out with each of them so with my last pregnancy I felt the same as you--this is my last and I want it to be a surprise. We asked the dr. if my husband could catch the baby so he could find out what it was before everyone else...it killed my husband not knowing what gender the baby was. Well it was a boy-my hubby finally got his son and he got to deliver him!! So cool! The hardest part was to come up with names.

Arin said...

OH-and I had my baby shower after baby was born-the next week my friends showered me with boy clothes and things I had made a list for if I was to have a boy-plus they all got to see him and hold him-I loved it.

Katrina said...

I found out with my first two - both girls - but when I went in at 20 weeks for the ultrasound with this one, the baby was not cooperative, (s)he kept its little legs crossed the whole time. So hubby and I were going to have another ultrasound to find out, but we decided against it. It would be kind of nice to know, sinse we have NO boy stuff, but it is neat not knowing too!

I am a control freak. I found out as quickly as we could with my son. And I'm sure if we ever have another it will be the same way. I just want to be ready with baby gender appropriate stuff. Yellow is not a favorite color of mine.

Anissa said...

We found out for both pregnancies. More because we needed to know if we needed a boy name (we had a girl name ready).

AP Mommy said...

That will be impressive! I just can't wait. I even asked at my ten week appt if they could tell hahaha. We're REALLY hoping for a girl and then we're done. If it's a boy ... we might still be done. But there's no way I could do the 'surprise' thing! I'd want to know TOO bad I'd peek at an ultrasound. haha

Manic Mother said...

We found out with all the boys. IF (big if) there is ever a number 4 I have thought about not finding out...I can't imagine finding out I am having a 4th boy!

The Jacobsen Family! said...

I HAD to find out with all 4 of mine. No way could I wait the entire 9 mo. Waiting the 5 mo was torture enough! LOL!
I am always impressed with people who can manage to not find out until the birth.

I found out with my daughter and decided I wanted to know during my second pregnancy also. I saw a specialist due to "advanced maternal age". They had some advanced ultrasound equipment and I got a great peek inside. The tech said the baby rolled over but she saw that it was a girl. At 36 week I saw my OB and begged for an size check the baby was so low and painful. The tech kept checking my file and finally asked if I was told I was carrying a girl. Um, Yes. WRONG!!! My son was born 4 days later. I had a warning but could barely walk and was in no shape to redo anything.

I didn't find out the gender of either of my boys. If we have a third, I probably will. If I had twins DEFINITELY I'd have to know.

Nanbon44 said...

if it were me and I had a boy and a girl I would be like who cares if it is another boy or a girl, as long as it is healthy. What a wonderful suprise you will get when the new family makes his or her entrance into the world.

lfhpueblo said...

If you're or once were a nurse you can look at the ultrasound and kind of figure it out for yourself anyways.

I wouldn't want to find out but I'm not sure if I could wait that long! I think my husband would be also be ok with not finding out.

Kati said...

I would really like to wait to find out the gender.. but I don't think I could.

I was considering only letting my mother-in-law know.. and then have a gender reveal party...

We didn't find out the gender with our first child, but we plan to find out with baby number 2. Our first was a boy, so I have a ton of boy clothes, but if this one is going to be a girl, I want time to get things for her and I know family will want tons of time to get cute little girl stuff for her. :)

alissa4illustration said...

I had to know. I thought for sure Mica was going to be a girl, but we found out at the ultrasound that he was a boy. I thought I had a hunch, but was wrong.

I kind of think going in, having the ultrasound, you do hear a surprise. They are like, "It's a _____!" Plus with the ultrasound pictures it's pretty easy to tell if they have a third leg, or not.

I am 20 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. I didn't find out the gender with any of my pregnancies so far (they were all boys!) I have an ultrasound next week and a little part of me wants to find out but both my husband and I love a good surprise too!

I didn't know with my first and I did ok waiting, but I found out with children #2 through #8. It would have drove me nuts not knowing!!

Rachel C said...

I have no idea why, but we found out with #1 and #3, but didn't find out for #2. I guess I just felt differently for some reason. It was fun both ways though :)

Hippie4ever said...

We didn't want to know and asked not to be told. Unfortunately, after she viewed the baby she began referring to him as he...so we had a pretty good idea

i always thought i would wait but both times now i just could not. I was too excited to be able to know now.

I found out the sex with all of my children. I like being able to pick out cute clothes and preparing for one or the other. It would drive me mad to wait. As for epidurals I had two with my four kids. My first labor was barely 3 hours and they gave in to my screaming insistance for one even though I was told it may not have time to work. It didn't, but it took some of the burn out of pushing. My second (my only girl) I didn't even know I was in labor until I went to my doctor's appointment and was told I was 5 centimeters dialated. By the time I got to the hospital I was 7 and they broke my water. It was only 26 minutes later that my daughter was born and I was screaming for pain medication but of course that wasn't going to happen. She was born weighing 9lbs 1oz and omg that was painful. I got pregnant with my third eight years later and because of my fast labors and the fact that my son was much smaller, I was induced. I finally got my epidural and it was heaven! I was sure I wanted it again next time. Well, I just gave birth to my fourth (and last) baby 9 days ago at 37 weeks and almost didn't make it to the hospital on time! No chance of an epidural there. I got there at 7 centimeters and they got me into a room by 2:07am. I immediately started screaming at the nurses that he was coming and they didn't believe me! They caught him at 2:12am and my doctor didn't get there until 15 minutes later. They didn't even have time to get an IV in me or a monitor on the baby. They were shoving paperwork in my face as he was coming out and making me sign! It may have been 5 minutes but it felt like an eternity of pain! My little boy was born 5lbs 8oz and perfect. I look at my tiny little guy now and know the pain was worth it.

I thought we both didn't know with my son, but after he was born my hubby turned to me and said, "I knew the whole time!" He really wanted to know so when I went to the bathroom the ultrasound tech told him!
I am pregnant with our second and will not find out again, as for my hubby he wants to know again. I told him if he finds out we have to have a boy and girl name picked out before the ultrasound so I won't try to read into what names he agrees to! I just love the surpise. How many good surprises to we really get in life?!

deanna said...

I know it was a few years ago, but the doctors swore to my mom (after several ultrasounds) that my brother was gonna be a girl. Oopsy.

I found out with all 4 of mine. I'm a planner and had to know! =D

Way back when I was pregnant, they couldn't tell the gender before birth so I didn't know either time. If I could hve, I would. It makes it so much easier to plan for the nursery, baby showers (Yes, I would let others know the gender, also.)

Dawnette Thomas said...

I have five beautiful blessings which I did not no their gender until the doctor lifted our baby up and told us. I loved being "old-fashioned" and waiting, it actually gave the ultrasound techs a challenge and the delivery nurses got very excited as well.

Jeanie said...

I'm not quite at that stage of life but when I do become pregnant I like the idea of not knowing the gender of my baby. I think it would be a fun surprise that will make for interesting preparations. Besides, I'll have a reason to research both boy and girls names. How fun!

I have found out with both of my pregnancies and I will with my (fingers crossed) next one, too!
