Did It Work For You?

Where has the time gone? I'm already in week 36 of my pregnancy and will have a new baby before I know it!

I remember that around this time with my son I became miserable and was so ready to have him. I'm not QUITE there yet with this baby, but I'm sure I will be in about 1-2 weeks. I remember trying so many of the old wives tales or other tips that people told me would bring on labor. None of them worked so I'm not a believer and think when the baby wants to come is when it will come.

I do want know if you tried anything to bring on labor or know a friend who did. More importantly, I want to know if it WORKED! If it's something you're supposed to eat, please leave the recipe. Who knows how desperate I'll be to have this baby by the end of the month!

So let's hear it, what have you learned?

When I was getting miserable with my first pregnancy, I was told to take or eat ginger. I took it one night, probably 7 or 8pm and my water broke at 2am the next morning. Don't know if it was the ginger or not but that's what happened for me.

First, how do you get the personalized message up there where it says leave a comment? I want to do that too!

Since I only had one child, I can tell you what the doctor told me back then.

Move. The week before your due date, vacuum every day, dust the furniture every day, clean the bathroom every day, take a walk every day, clean the floors every day...get the drift? He said it would be a two part reward:
1. The baby will come home to a spotless house.
2. The movement which is all over the place, no particular order or pattern, will bring about the birth.
He was right. She was delivered ON her due date. :o)

Stopped by from SITS to say Howdy!

my doc has actually told me to start taking evening primrose oil at 36 weeks. he said it won't induce labor, but it will prime the cervix and has shown to make labor shorter and easier. email me if you want the details, i have a whole pamphlet on it :-)

Umm maybe try Liz's eggplant parmasean recipe. I used evening primrose and lots of intercourse with Owen. Although, I didn't actually go into labor it prepared my cervix. The dr. said my cervix felt like mush it was so soft, lol. With Lindsey the intercourse worked. I had a quick labor with her. Actually Owen was induced and didn't take very long either. I bet if I waited a few days before letting her induce me (she did a few days before my due date0 I would've had a similarly fast labor as I did with Lindsey.

Nothing worked for me, unfortunately. Including an induction attempt! My first was determined to stay put. Hope that these last 4 weeks go quickly and smoothly for you- good luck!

I think it's all a crock! the only reason that oil works usually is because it causes extreme abdominal cramps which seems to start contractions...it's not safe though. i tried it all and nothing worked! lol

Never made it past 36 weeks with either of my boys! With my oldest I was actually having contractions 4 minutes apart for a week so she told me after an admission to go home and rub my nipples in a circular motion. I guess it releases a hormone. Well, I thought it was silly but 3 hours later I had my baby!

Oh I hoped and hoped once I hit the magical "38 week" mark that my son would arrive. I tried black liqourish, I drank my weight in rasberry tea, I ate spicy food till I cried (that just gave me heartburn not contractions), I walked, I ran, I jumped up and down, we tried sex (the husband was adament that one more time might work ;-P) none of those worked...

The thing that did it was "stirring of the membranes" by my OB. I had my due-date appointment which I had HOPED not to need, siigh - and she "stirred" them... it was highly uncomfortable for a few minutes... and from that point forward I was miserable, ok not miserable but uncomfortable ;-) and with a purpose ;-) I was cramping from the appointment until around 10pm when the contractions began. So I'm all for that with my second one when the time comes.

Hopefully your little one will come before you're overly eager. :)

Hey!
I haven't had my babe yet, but my mom & sister swear by walking. Of course you have to kind of KNOW you're getting close (how they KNOW this, I don't know!) but when you think it's about time...hit the road. Mom said it took 2 laps around our block...my sister walked 30 blocks at the ocean front...once we got 30 blocks AWAY from the car her contractions were 1 min. apart...she delivered VERY soon after getting back to the hospital!

So, I tried walking, cleaning, eating pineapple, the doctor stretched my cervix, etc., etc., etc. Basically, if google or any book or any person suggested it and it didn't completely gross me out (ie., cod liver oil), I tried it. And, both my children were late, late, late. I needed to be induced with my 2nd or I swear she'd still be there!

Best of luck to you though!

Well, my doctor tried stripping my membranes in hopes that it would encourage Alex to make his appearance. It did not work. Then, she said, "The one thing that got you into this situation will get you out". So...without diving further into "T.M.I.-ville", I will say she was right.
Oh! And holy cow! 36 weeks already, eh? Crazy!

My husband made two ipod mixes-one upbeat to play while in labor to get me inspired (lots of female vocalists) and then a mellow mix (classical and instrumental for the room and to drown out the hospital noises. What a great gift. It was amazing to have.

Well, I tried having sex, and it gave me regular contractions (hard enough that I wasn't able to sleep through them) all night long....until morning when they STOPPED....3 or 4 days later I had my daughter. That was a huge let down. While it did start contractions, it didn't dilate my cervix at all. I probably won't try it again.

I can relate! I am 35 weeks with # 1 and feeling miserable. Plus it's hell hot in TX. Still I want little one to arrive no sooner than 39/40 weeks. I'm willing to suffer to let her cook as long as possible. I read that oils (evening primose and cod liver) don't do much and aren't really safe. If I do go past my due date, I plan to see my pediatric chiropractor who will adjust my pelvic bone and help baby descend. You can find one in your city at www.icpa4kids.com. I also heard that acupuncture/acupressure works. There is supposed to be a spot on your palm that, when pressed, causes your uterus to spasm

I tried castor oil with kids #1 and #2 when I was overdue and it worked both times, but ask your doctor first!

I tried it again with #3 but wasn't overdue. It didn't work at all. It took me being overtired and ready to pass out and sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep to get labor started. Seriously in the middle of the night rough labor started!!

both my kids are adopted, but I had a friend "desperate" when she was pregnant with her second one to do "anything" to go into labor. She was going to do the cod liver oil thing but decided against it.What worked was she did a lot of walking the day before he was born. Took her then 3=year=old to the local zoo and they walked all around then she walked more at home and cleaned and just kept super busy. She went into labor that evening

best of luck! how exciting with a new baby!

For me, scheduling the induction and telling her that was her "eviction notice" seemed to do something, that and the three miles I walked! lol. She came literally five hours before the scheduled induction!

My son had to be induced dispite walking to the ends of the earth for the entire week after his due date.

My daughter... Yeah, she was 2 weeks early and I did nothing. So you never know. I tried EVERYTHING under the sun with my SON and nothing worked.

But I do know castor oil has worked for friends of mine so give that a try!

Nope, I have nothing for you. I had 2 cesareans. I hope you get some wonderful (and helpful) tips!!

Good luck! I did try to walk a lot, clean, and eat spicy food, but none worked for me!

A friend of ours (doctor) prescribed sex. Semen has a hormone called prostaglandins that can cause contractions when you are pregnant, which can bring about labor. I am not an OBGYN but ours came 2 weeks early. Possible link?

I tried everything with my first 3 babies. Nothing worked. With my 4th, i had a pressure point massage 6 days before her due date. IT WORKED. Only 5 hours 18 mins of really easy labor(for labor anyway). I will do it again if i have another baby.

I googled all the methods, too. And asked my doc. He said sex was the only thing that really worked.

So that's what we tried. Not often, mind you, but we tried. ;)

Three days before my due date this past April, my doc said he could induce, but he really didn't think it would work. My cervix, he said, just wasn't ready. At all.

My water broke twelve hours later.

(Then I pushed a ten pound baby out of my body. Now known as Fatty McButterpants/Rascall Fatts)

I only have one, but nothing worked...even when I was 2 weeks overdue. He did not want to come out at all and I ended up having a c-section after 36 hours of labor (my cervix had started to close back up)!! Every baby is different, so every pregnancy is different for sure! Good luck.
{Tell your hubby that a foot massage works...at least you will get some well-deserved pampering.}

Well, I tried a ton with my now 5 week old babe and none of it worked! He ended up being 15 days late (11 more days late than my first!)! I tried every pressure point, tea, walking, chiropractic, nipple stimulation and so on! He was just stubborn!

As a doula I just wanted to warn you that castor oil and cohosh are not a good idea if you are not under the direct supervision of a midwife or doctor- they can lead to bleeding and other complications if not accurately managed. Just wanted to throw that out there! Good luck!

not long left now. you must be so excited. i tried lots of methods to bring on my labour and none worked. In the end i ended up having to have a c-section anyway!

I just read Chic Mama's comment but you may want to ask your doctor about castor oil. On Baby Story on TLC this week a lady used on her midwives advice and went into labor that day.

With B I went into labor on my due date. I was pretty uncomfortable the two weeks prior but did not really "try" anything to induce labor.

On a side note our nephew was born 3 weeks early and had serious breathing problems in the NICU more than a week. I wouldn't want to rush nature too much.

I am 31 weeks pregnant and had a little scare tonight when we got rear-ended in our car. I wouldn't recommend getting into a car accident but I can only imagine how much my baby would be squirming to get out if I was 36 weeks and got in a wreck.

For my first baby, we moved my husband's office. I helped and carried much more than I should have. POOF! Water broken at 6am next morning.

Twins: Drove sitting in a car for 9 1/2 hours. They didnt like it I guess and POOF! Water broken at 4:03 am.

Last baby: NOTHING! Had to be induced. :(

Good luck! There is no guaranteed way to make it happen. I always heard move things, do something strenous. But SAFE! :)
