Transition From Crib To Toddler Bed

Yesterday I posted that I was going through my nesting stage. Part of that was trying to get my little man out of the crib and into his "Big Boy Bed" so that I could put the crib in Isabella's room.

I admit that I did not think it would be easy. I even left the crib in his room because I thought I'd have to use it anyway.

Friday afternoon he was showing interest in his toddler bed so I put his new bedding on it and went on and on about his "Big Boy Bed". I put it beside his crib and let him sit on it for a while. I took his rain forest light up thing off of his crib and put it on his toddler bed so that he could turn it on at night.

That night we put him in it and he seemed fine-until we walked out. He SCREAMED for me to come back. I went and sat beside his bed for a while and rubbed his back. When I walked out about 15 minutes later, he called for me but only about 3 times and it wasn't a scream. I watched him fall asleep on the monitor. About 10 minutes later he woke up a a little and went to turn his rain forest thing on but it wasn't to his side like it normally is in his crib. He FREAKED! Hubby went in there and showed him that it was on the head of his bead now and he pushed the button to turn it on. He went right back to sleep and slept until 7:30 the next morning!

I really thought that he'd get up in the middle of the night and get out of his bed. He didn't! He stayed put the whole time!

We got home late Saturday night and he was asleep in his car seat by the time we got there so I just put him in his bed. He looked up, but didn't move. I turned his rain forest thing on and walked out. He didn't get up until morning!

Sunday, I got my dad and brother to help hubby take the crib out of his room and rearrange the furniture. I thought this would throw him off a little-I was wrong!

Sunday night all we had to do was lay him in his bed, and he whined for a minute-but went right to sleep!

Monday I was REALLY worried about nap time because it would be light outside and I thought he'd just get up! He actually fell asleep in his high chair at lunch so I didn't even have to worry about it! I just took him up and put him in his bed. Yesterday he was so tired at nap time that he didn't even move after I put him in his bed!

Monday night he must have fallen out of his bed because I found him the next morning on the floor with the sheet pulled over him! Good thing that bed is really close to the ground!

Here is a picture of him on Saturday night. I haven't gone in there to take a picture because I'm worried it will wake him, but here he is on the baby monitor!

It really hasn't been bad at all! Knock on wood, it looks like he's made the transition and my BABY is now sleeping in his BIG BOY bed with no problems! I always get myself worked up thinking that these transitions(like taking the paci away) are going to be hard, but he does great! It is a lot harder on me than him!

So happy it went well! We moved my son to a toddler bed at 15 months because we had to take down and put up the crib twice in 3 months and figured why do it again. Plus the doctor put a bug in my ear telling me he was tall enough to climb out of the crib so keep a close eye on him. Big mistake! He was 3 before I could get him to sleep in his bed well. I swore to myself if I had another kid I would wait until they were 3 or climbing out of the crib before I moved them.

Glad your experience was more pleasant than mine.

That pic is too cute. I am glad your experience has been good I haven't even thought about it mostly because of the nap times. I guess I will have to move her some day though!

That's great Dee! I tried to transition Julissa once but she screamed her head off. I am going to get her rainforest thing out and see if that helps her. Thanks!

Such a cute picture! I'm so glad to hear it's going well......those transitions can be tough, but a lot of times the little ones give signs that they are ready.

no kidding harder on the mom, maybe if you didn't get worked up about it, he'd be tough?? who knows!

When you do i have questions! How old is he?

That's awesome! We're still trying to decide whether to take the side off of our little man's crib yet or not (it turns into a toddler bed then a double headboard and footboard!). He climbs out on his own already, but I'm afraid if we take it off completely, he'll be out of bed all the time!

I remember switching my kids from a crib to their big girl beds. One went really smooth. The other not as well. Eventually they outgrow the cribs. We used padding to help her feel that more "confined" or "locked in" feeling. After a while she began kicking off the padding.

I'm so glad to hear it went well! I think that once they're ready, they're ready. This little guy sure was! lol

Mine is 2. We moved him to the big boy bed this week! He's been napping in it for a while, but now he's in it for night time too. He's done so well and we're so proud!

Hurray for you! Hopefully it continues to go well though don't be surprised if he regresses in some ways when your second arrives.
Chloe was 18 months when John arrived and she had been sleeping in her 'big girl' bed for 2 months. After he arrived Chloe cried and cried and only wanted to sleep in the crib. Well since she couldn't (it's John's new bed), we let her sleep in the playpen in her room.

Anyway, that's just my story. I hope it works out for you but I was thankful for the warning from a friend about regression after a sibbling is born.

Am I rambling?....

Glad it's going so well. He sure does look cute.

I've found that usually it is me worrying about the next step and my girls just take it all in stride.

You are one lucky mama! Things never go that smoothly 'round here!

This is wonderful for you. I went through pretty much the same thing with my son. Easy transition and I have photos of him falling out of bed too!

Now in a few weeks I'll see how the girl will do.

So glad it's working out for you.

COngratulations. WE've been in a big boy bed for a little over a week now. he still has moments where he asks to come sleep with me but he's doing really well. In the am if he wakes up before me then he can climb in bed that's our deal.

awesome transition! how old is he? he made the transition for my girl at about 18-19 months old. she loved it. then she started having some set backs and getting out of bed. I HOPE your boy doesn't, but don't be surprised if one day he gets up during nap time. we had to put a gate by her door. i didn't mind that she got out of bed, but she had to stay in her room for rest time.

good luck

I am transitioning twin boys right now and it is a love/hate thing for us! In the past week and a half they've had one bad nap and one really bad bed time and the adventure continues.

I noticed the colander/hat pic below and wanted to mention that I have one on my blog of my son doing this. So funny!

Thanks for the post! It's really encouraging since I will be putting my son in his own toddler bed soon too.

I just wrote about it in my latest post My son's junior bed
