The New Neighbors HAVE To Go

For a little background, I live in a new neighborhood. We were actually the 3rd house to start building so I've had to deal with a lot of waking up early to the sound of loud music and hammers. I'm OK with that, I knew that would happen.

Well, my neighborhood is pretty much built now. My street has been done for about a year so I expect a little bit of peace and quiet!

The house two doors down is actually owned by another lady and she rents it out. That's OK with me. My problem is, she must rent it month by month to people who just need it for a little while. In the past 2 years since her house has been built, there have been no less than 4 families that lived there. I have no problem with that either because MOST families are good neighbors.

Not this new one! I'm pretty sure they may even be vampires. LOL! They started moving in at least 3 weeks ago...at midnight. That's right, MIDNIGHT. I woke up to people talking REALLY loudly with slight screaming and high pitched laughing.

I can deal with one night of that. A few nights later, the SAME thing happened. I'm starting to get a bit annoyed now. I'm pregnant, so I wake up multiple times a night to go tinkle. I need quiet the rest of the night so I can actually sleep!

I don't mind them moving in at midnight with their KIDS running around, as long as they're quiet. By the way, do these kids go to school? Why are they up at 1:00 in the morning?

Since then, I have not ONCE seen them during the day. I have only heard them come home really loudly somewhere around 11:00-12:00 at night. Until yesterday. Hubby came inside from working on his truck and told me that their kids were running around in the road and he hadn't seen the parents at all. It isn't THAT big of a deal because we live at the end of the very back road in a small neighborhood. But still, it could be dangerous.

THEN, last night I go to bed at about 10:00 and I was exhausted. At 10:45, I wake up to kids yelling and running around. Seriously? Not this again! Sure enough, there are kids running around in the road and in their yard. At about 11:30, they're still really loud. Only this time, they're INSIDE hanging out one of the windows(or so hubby says, I was in bed with a pillow over my head trying to go back to sleep).

I have NO clue how many kids they have or how old they are. I have seen no less than 8 kids ranging in age from 5ish-17ish. I don't even know if parents live there! I've never seen them! Their house is actually one of the smallest houses in our neighborhood so I know why the kids would want to come outside, but why can't they do it during the day and SLEEP at night?

Anyway, I was finally able to go to sleep around 11:30 or so. BUT at 4:00, I woke up to loud music and a car starting. One of the cars was leaving the driveway.

It's 7:45 now. The house is quiet and dark. I'm thinking about going outside and turning the radio up REALLY loudly in my car! Pin It!

You should definately go do that and then get ahold of the landlord and let her know what's going on!

Ok, yeah...must be vampires! Kids that stay up late like that make me wonder! Hope they move out quickly!!!

I would try to speak with the family directly. If that doesn't work, then call the landlord. If it's still not working, crank your music up as loud as you can & make as much obscene noise during the day when they're sleeping.

Does your town have a noise ordinance? You could always call the cops.

UGH....that's why I live in the country!!! Try sleeping with a big, loud, floor fan....and call the owner!

OH NO!! I feel your frustration! I would be going crazy! Get a Sleepmate. That's what I have. It is a white noise machine that drowns out any noises. I have a monitor to hear my kids though.

Hmmmmm....vampires? LOL Maybe! LOL

Weird....

AudreyO said...

Do you have a way to contact the landlord? Does your state have a noise curfew? Here in CA, after 10pm or so complaints can be filed with the police. It's so fun to get to "visit" the blogs from Bloggy Carnival now that I have time and can read and post.

We had neighbors across the road who were like that. We were friends, but it sure was hard to be friendly when they ran around their yards (with an illegal bonfire raging) at all hours of the night. They slept in until noon every day once they'd finally settled down. It was weird - they ate suppers at 9 p.m. or later.

Anyway, they moved a while back. Now we have equally noisy neighbors across the road. They use bad language at the tops of their lungs. I wish I had the old neighbors back!

Amy A.K.A. "The Mrs." said...

that sounds pretty annoying! I hope my story makes you feel a little better. I had a neighbor next door to me when I was renting a house. He would yell every morning at 5 or so and throw rocks at my house. seriously. Guess how many times i called the police and nothing happened.
I moved as soon as I could.

Or they are indeed vampires. Got garlic?

Ugh!! That's why I love noise bylaws. I'd call the cops if I see those kids in the street at night with no parents around.

And I'd definitely contact the owner.

Maybe it's the Cullens, lol. Seriously though does your city have a noise ordinance? Here you can't play load music or be disturbing past 10 pm I believe I would call the police. They wouldn't have to know it was you who called. Every Sunday we have the Joy of listening to the Bom Bom Bom Bom of our spanish neighbors all day and into the night I swear it's just one long continous song playing!

Oh Boy...Oh Boy...Oh Boy said...

Contact your police department and find out what the rules are by you. Here we have a nuisance abatement (sp?) law that makes the landlord responsible for stuff like this, to the point that if the police are called more than 3 times in 60 days a property can be seized!

Just Jenn said...

Maybe its Edward and the rest of the Cullen crew...oh if that is that case I am soooo moving!!

I am sorry you have to deal with that. Most cities have a noise ordanice, here its ater 10pm it has to be quiet.

Ok girl turn up the radio, open the windows, and start banging on pots and pans! That is just nuts and really someone needs to be called about those poor children being out so late, that is so dangerous! I would call the cops, enough is enough!

My new neighbors keep moving things in across the street under the cover of night! Hubby thinks they are secret agents or something! I think he watches too much tv!!

Leane said...

By all means......Call the COPS!! Especially if the kids seem unsupervised. You don't have to give your info, especially if you call from a cell.....and just say you are concerned because of unsupervised kids running loose. The police should get out there quickly. You may save alot of heartache. Not just for yourself, either.....for all the neighbors. Oh, and WRITE/Call your HOA....

I don't envy what your going through but I did find it amusing reading your neighborhood dileama. It's hard to believe people are so disrespectful...but then again if it's just kids what do ya expect. Good luck..maybe they won't be there long..ya think?

Happy SITS day! I love how you think they're vampires, haha. That is too funny. I hope this has resolved since then!

MrsM said...

My hubby works graveyards so our house is really active between 9pm and 11:30 when he's getting ready for work, and I'm up pretty much all night with our 4 month old and I watch tv, and have music on and things like that. Then, during the day, I am awake all day with all of the kids (we also have a 5 1/2 year old and a 19 month old) playing and unschooling. I only sleep 3 hours a night at this point usually between 3:30am and 6:30am, and Hubby sleeps during the day.

The reason I tell you all of this is because we totally get dirty looks from the neighbors. They think we're on drugs-but we're perfectly normal people who just happen to have bizarre schedules. I'm sure your neighbors are the same way [although letting their kids run crazy is not cool at any hours].

LeNesha said...

OMG, I've been there, and, while I was pregnant, so I know exactly how you feel.

It was about three years ago, before Jim and I bought our house. We were living in an adorable townhouse at the time and the lady who lived next door had 4 or 5 kids of her own PLUS quite a few adults who were always in and out all hours of the day and night. Every Thursday, without fail, this woman had a porch party, and it continued throughout the entire weekend. Loud music, fighting, doors slamming, kids running wild - I can't even tell you how many times the police were called. It was awful!

Happy SITS day!

I feel your pain. I have similar neighbors who are also renters. Mine do go out in the daylight but they let their kids run around without supervision and one of the kids (4 years old) stuck her hand under my fence and my dog (defending his territory) big her so they accused my dog of being viscious (looong story) my homeowner's insurance ended up paying the $1000 to settle the dispute!! Argh! Oh, and our neighborhood is nice for kids but some people drive pretty fast so I wouldn't let my kids run around unattended like they do. It makes living there very unpleasant sometimes. Ugh that's so frustrating! I'm suffering through that right now with noisy neighbors, but we live in an apartment, not a house. You don't expect that kind of noise when you're a home owner. Hopefully by now the situation has resolved itself... if not, I agree with call the police. Most cities have noise ordinances. Even if not, they can at least check on the "children in danger" that you call on, because they must be in danger if they are yelling that late at night. :-)
Hope the baby, and the rest of the family is well.

I had the same problem with my neighbor well she would blare her music at all hours of the night and they would have guest come and go with their loud vehicles.

One day I was so tired and couldn't sleep because the music was bumping my house and I said enough was enough and walked over there and asked her to turn it down because I could sleep. I just know my hair was a mess and I was still in my nightgown all big fat a pregnant. I bet I was a sight to see. I haven't had trouble since.

I would check your city ordinances if you don't want to go over there and call the police to come handle it.

Robin said...

DON'T confront them yourselves! Call the police. They legally have to give the family a warning. If you call a second time, then they will have a court appearance. That way you are being fair and giving them a warning, while not being in the fire of conflict. You don't know these people and don't want to put yourselves in harms way. If it continues, you can continue to call. Police are legally obligated to come out, and usually want to, as they don't want to have to deal with something worse later. This is why we have a government...use them! I can speak from experience in this situation. Ive done the "nothing" thing, Ive done the "asking nicely" thing, and the "call the police" thing listed above. Believe me, that is the best way to deal with this if it continues.

Do this for your SANITY!!

Good luck and hope you get some sleep soon :)
