Aloha Friday #18

It's Aloha Friday again over at An Island Life! Answer my question and make sure you post one on your blog! After that, go relax because today is Friday!!

My question for this week is:

Do you have any sinus/flu/cold remedies that work for you?

I've been sick for a while now and since I can't take anything other than Tylenol, I'm looking for anything help relieve the sinus pressure, runny nose, cough, sore throat-take your pick!

I did send hubby out to get a Tylenol head congestion or something like that..we'll see if that helps.

I tried all kinds of hot liquids, soups, vitamin C...NOTHING seems to really be helping! Pin It!

How come you can't take Sudafed? You can take Tylenol cold as well. I hope you feel better soon.

I have no remedies except to lay in bed and sleep, LOL.

Feel better soon, Dee. :)

Have you ever tried to rinse out your sinuses? Kind of strange at first, but it can really help!

Saline nose drops (or a neti pot), Hot compress to the sinuses (I have a gel mask I heat up in a bowl of warm water, it does wonders). Most heat around your throat, a lot of liquids, ice-cream, popsicles, anything cold will help numb your throat. Gargle often with a lot of salt water.

I've used a Netipot this winter,

Neti pot all the way. Takes some getting used to, but it works wonders for clearing up sinus pressure and all the ick.

I'm not sure if it's safe in pregnancy, so you'd definitely want to check, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE zicam. It's homeopathic, and safe while breastfeeding, but double check on pregnancy. I like the nasal gel swabs...feel better soon!!

I started with a neti pot last year and then onto a Grossan Hydro Pulse system! Haven't had to take antibiotics for two years now!

People laugh, but if I feel a teeny scratchy throat coming on (first sign of impending cold for me) then I start with the Airborne - works for me and also EmergencE in any flavor! But truthfully - I'm one of those people who has only had one (barely) little cold in over 5 years! Hubby and best frined swear by "Mucinex" if they start to get a cough/cold??!!

I use a hot mist vaporizer. Vicks makes one that I bought at CVS. I put it close to me and I breathe in the mist and it is wonderful. It really helps to clean out my sinus.

anytime i feel sick like that i instantly take 2 of those huge nyquil gelthings and zonk out. not always easy to do with the kids around. worst case scenerio i have to hang til after bedtime. then i dose up and crash. usually helps.

either that or benedryl - something that'll knock me out so i can just sleep it off.

hope you feel better soon! (i'm starting to think something's going around the blogs! lol)

"" the neti pot. Peppermint or eucalyptus oil - you can add it to a bath or take a qtip and dab a little just inside your nose(doesn't have to be FAR up your nose) Hot tea with honey and lemon. Feel better!

Tylenol cold. Not sure if you can take taht though. Feel better soon!

One thing that I have done before is to heat up a pot of boiling water, pour it in a big bowl, and then lean over it with a towel over my head and the bowl trapping the steam inside. Sounds weird but it works. I also try to take a ton of hot steamy showers.

Also, I wanted to let you know that I gave you a Kreativ Blogger award, go to my blog and pick it up!

Another vote for the neti pot - it's really strange and somewhat unpleasant the first time you use it, but it really helps and you get used to it.

I also love Zicam and you should be able to use it while pregnant. My OB told me it was fine (though you might want to confirm with yours.)

I can not take the decongestants either (and they would definitely help). I completely forgot about the Neti Pot. I may have to try one that I bought a while back tonight.

Can you use Vick's vapor rub? That's what I use on the boys. Puff's makes a tissue with vicks on it too. I've always heard to use honey for coughs. I think that's all I have...

NateAndJakesMom said...

Hot tea with lemon and dry toast. My mom would only let me eat that whenever I was sick, no matter what the ailment. I think it FORCED me to get better else I died from bland food.

We usually use saline drops & I Love the vicks shower thingies. They have a vanilla one that isn't as strong. You don't even have to be in the shower. Just turn on the shower, close the bathroom door & close the shower door/curtain down then relax.

Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah, I was gonna say the Netipot too!

cover the bottom of your feet with Vick vapor rub and cover with socks. I have heard it works for sinuses. Prego friendly.

Alicia said...

I agree with Sarah. I have tried the vicks on the bottom of the feet and cover with socks. I used that on my daughter because she has a really bad cough. It worked throughout the night!

Ziacam always works for me when I feel a cold coming on.

I take 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in 8 ounces of water every morning and my allergy/sinus symptoms have disappeared.
If I feel new symptoms coming back then I immediately start treating with 1 tbs ACV in 8 oz water 3 times per day. Works every time!
And apple cider vinegar cures a TON of other symptoms as well....skin problems, lose weight, stop snoring...its great!
Check out www.earthclinic.com for other natural remedies.

Zicam works really well for me... it won't necessarily relieve the pressure and all that but it usually helps to make your colds shorter and if you feel it coming on you can sometimes avoid it altogether with that stuff. Has worked every time for me.

If I do get a cold or bad allergies, I usually use a nose spray like Afrin that clears your nose and allows you to breath.

Feel better soon!

Zinc, vitamin C water, rest.

MaggieM said...

If you can take OTC's, try Alka Seltzer Cold remedy, Afrin to unstuff your nose, Nyquil to zonk you out. Homeopathic remedies include Hot Chicken Broth, a steaming shower, Vitamin C or orange juice, hot tea with lemon and/or honey. Hope you feel better:)

My mom swears by her netipot, but I can't stand it. The feeling of water going down the back of my nose & throat really gets to me.

I just started taking mucinex and it seems to be helping.
